Percenting is what we call the process of selecting various takeoff objects, based on the Labor Cost Codes (LLCs) used to build them, and setting a "Percent Complete" at a specific moment in time (usually the current day). This is the first part of tracking production - how much work is getting done. The second part is tracking the time it takes, we cover that in Related Articles.
Example
This is a very simple example of percenting a single Condition that accounts for the construction of a wall.
When you are building out the estimate for a typical wall, there may be two or three Labor Cost Codes (LCCs) associated with the construction (let us say Framing, Hanging, and Finishing).
On Day 1, the Framer may completely frame the wall and the Hanger may have about half of his work completed. In DPC, the Foreman sets the Percent Complete for LCC 'Framer' to 100% and LCC 'Hanger' at 50% and the LCC 'Finisher' remains at 0% (not started).
The next day, the Hanger may finish their part of the job and the Finisher may have completed about 75% of the taping and mudding. The Foreman would set the Percent Complete for Hanger to 100% and Finisher to 75%.
The Foreman tracks the daily changes to the "percent complete" for all objects in his assigned area/region/phase of the project (this is why you may have multiple foremen - each working on diffent floors, for example).
Percenting is separate from, but integrally tied to, Timekeeping. Each increase in an object's "Percent Complete" increases the "Earned Hours" for that Labor Cost Code (you will see this on the Budget Tab. Percenting is day-specific - you cannot go back to a previous date and enter percents nor percent a date in the future. You can set cumulative percents (everything up until the current day) without daily entries, but you will lose some of the granularity that makes DPC such a powerful program. This is why it is recommended to set percents every work day.
Percenting with Digital Production Control is easy and helps keep a project on budget by giving the Foreman and Project Manager up-to-date information on how far along a job is (and with Timekeeping, how much labor is being used to complete that work). Percenting is performed directly on the electronic images on the Image Tab.
