Issue

Customer reports that User A is having problems running an On Center application. When User B signs onto the same computer, the programs work fine. If User A signs onto a different computer, the programs work correctly.

Possible Errors

  • Run Time Errors
  • Configuration or Installation Errors

Discussion

Windows' security can be a little complex. Sometimes, Domain profiles can be assigned to Security Groups that limit a user's ability to properly run, install, or configure the software. As an example, a client reported that User A was receiving a "Configuring Quick Bid" error anytime he launched the program. Other users on the same system did not encounter any issues.

Resolution

In the example above, the user's Domain Profile had been under a Security Group named "Performance Log Users" - this was applying restrictive security when the user logged into Windows. Moving the user out of that Domain Group and then having the user log out/back in resolved the issue.

A good rule of thumb is when one or more programs operate differently for two Windows users, the IT department needs to take a look at the differences between those users' profiles, starting at the machine level and working up to the Domain Level.
