Issue
For no apparent reason, Enterprise License Manager (ELM) simply stops working. The vendor daemon log may show something like:
Error: Lost connection to lmgrd, heartbeat timeout expired, exiting.
EXITING DUE TO SIGNAL 28 Exit Reason 5 in License server
LicenseEngine (oncenter) exited with status 54. (Error acquiring or releasing the Binding Agent lock)
Or other errors that indicate a communication issue between the virtual server where ELM is installed and the computer where LMBind is running.
This happens more often with the Virtual Server Edition but can affect the physical server version also.
Discussion
The various components of ELM are very sensitive to tampering. Port scanners, virus scanners, and malware scanners may cause one or more of the ELM components to shut down or stop responding.
For example, if you use a port scanner to check for malware and it causes the LMBind executable to stop, your license manager will stop serving licenses until the issues is resolved. Same goes for the vendor daemon, oncenter.exe.
Resolution
On Center cannot provide specifics about how to customize or configure your enterprise protection software but we have a few suggestions:
To resolve the issue you can:
- Disable port monitoring on the virtual server and on the machine where LMBind is running, or
- Add exceptions or rules to the ports on which oncenter.exe and LMbind are running
