Question
Can I configure LMBind to run as a service so it automatically starts when I reboot the LMBind machine?
Answer
Yes, packaging LMBind to run as a Service on a Windows machine is possible. It simply requires the use of a 3rd party utility.
On Center tested the built-in Windows "Service Configuration utility" (sc) to add LMBind as a service but we were unable to get it to work properly. So, we used “WinServ” to install and configure the service - this worked but because WinServ is a 3rd party product, it cannot be distributed, endorsed, or supported by On Center Software - OCS provides neither formal endorsement nor support for any 3rd party applications. WinServ is available here: http://www.sw4me.com/wiki/Winserv, but you can use any utility that allows an executable to be configured as a Service. The exact steps you follow may be a little different, but this should give you and idea of what you need to do.
Use of WinServ or any 3rd party utility is at your sole discretion and you accept responsibility for the utility’s use, configuration, as well as obtaining technical support from the vendor.
Follow the manufacturer's instructions for installing the configuration utility, the instruction below are for WinServ, but they will be similar for most utilities. (Once install on the server, WinServ is normally found in C:\WinServ ).
- Copy the LMBind files to C:\LMBind or some other easily accessible folder (we recommend using C:\LMBind to make it easy to locate the files). Do not place the LMBind files in the Winserv folder
- Open a Command Prompt
- Type: C:\ (or the drive letter where you’ve installed WinServ) <ENTER>
- Type: cd\ to return to the root of that drive <ENTER>
- Type: cd WinServ (or navigate to the folder where you installed WinServ) <ENTER>
- Type: winserv install lmbind C:\lmbind\lmbind.exe (substitute folder where you placed the LMBind files)ENTER>
- Type: winserv configure lmbind –start auto (no space between the dash and “start”) <ENTER>
- Type: winserv showconfig lmbind <ENTER>
Your screen should look like the screen shot below (note “-Start” is set to “auto”)
To start the service type sc start lmbind <ENTER>
You will also find this new Service in the Windows Services Management Console Snap-in.
Going forward, the "LMBIND" service will start automatically and run in the background when you reboot the machine.
