Issue

With the release of new touch-friendly operating systems, such as Windows 10 and 11, more and more people are hopping on the "touch" bandwagon. You may be wondering if On Center Software products work with Touch-enabled devices.

Discussion

This is a bit of a mixed-bag.

On-Screen Takeoff and Digital Production Control work with a touch-enabled screen, however your finger is not as pointy as a pen-type stylus and you cannot perform most takeoff-related activities very efficiently. Many new 'touch' screens use what is called capacitive/resistive technologies (they sense the pressure or electrical charge of your finger or the nub of a stylus) rather than using the signal from an electronic stylus (an 'active digitizer', for you techies) which is more precise.

If your stylus (pen) has a tip that looks like the one on the left (a hard, plastic nib), it will probably work with Windows-based products. These are 'active digitizer' stylii and they work fine with On-Screen Takeoff and Digital Production Control.

Different stylus nubs

However, if your screen/monitor only works with a stylus with a tip like an eraser-like nub (an artificial finger) (middle and left), you will probably need to stick with a mouse when using our products.

You may be able to navigate the programs using finger-touch, but many of the tools and functions require far greater precision.

You may have to ask the manufacturer of your Tablet to verify whether they support 'WACOM' type styli or only capacitive models.

Can I Use my Drawing/Graphic Tablet?

Possibly.

On-Screen Takeoff supports the following digitizing devices:

  • The original Digital Takeoff TableĀ®
  • The improved Digital Takeoff TableĀ® 2
  • GTCO branded digitizers which support TabletWorks 10

All other digitizing devices are unsupported. That does not mean they will not work with On-Screen Takeoff necessarily, but On Center Software does not provide assistance with installing, setting up, configuring, or troubleshooting these devices.

When using any digitizer or tablet drawing device other than the Digital Takeoff Table, be sure that you set the digitizer option correctly in On-Screen Takeoff. Click Dititizer > Use Digitizer (not Use Digital Takeoff Table).
